Government issues high-risk warning for Google Chrome users, asks users to update browser immediately

Google Chrome is one of the most popular web browsers in the world, with an estimated 3.2 billion users. However, it is also one of the most vulnerable to cyberattacks, as hackers often exploit security flaws in the browser to compromise users' devices and data. Recently, Google has confirmed that it has patched a high-severity zero-day security vulnerability in Chrome that was potentially exploited in the wild already. The vulnerability, identified as CVE-2023-16455, is a type confusion bug in the V8 JavaScript engine that could allow an attacker to execute arbitrary code on the target system. The bug was reported by an anonymous researcher on March 23, 2023, and Google acknowledged that it was aware of reports that an exploit for this vulnerability exists in the wild.

The Indian government's Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) has issued a high-risk warning for Google Chrome users, asking them to update their browser to the latest version as soon as possible. The advisory states that "multiple vulnerabilities have been reported in Google Chrome which could allow a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code, bypass security restrictions, access sensitive information, spoof user interface, cause denial of service condition or perform social engineering attacks on the targeted system". The advisory also provides a list of affected versions of Chrome and the steps to update the browser.

To update Chrome to the latest version, users can follow these steps:

- On your computer, open Chrome.

- At the top right, click More .

- Click Update Google Chrome. If you don't see this button, you're on the latest version.

- Click Relaunch.
