G20 Summit LIVE Updates: Rishi Sunak, Japan PM Fumio Kishida Arrive In Delhi


The G20 Summit 2023, the most awaited global event of the year, is all set to begin in New Delhi on September 9 and 10. The summit, hosted by India under the theme 'Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam' or 'One Earth, One Family, One Future', will bring together the leaders of the world's 20 major economies to discuss and decide on pressing issues such as climate change, sustainable development, digital transformation, and multilateral cooperation.

As the host country, India has rolled out a grand welcome for the visiting dignitaries, who have started arriving in the capital city since Thursday. Among the early arrivals were UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and Japan Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, who landed in Delhi on Friday morning. They were received by Union ministers at the airport and escorted to their respective hotels.

Sunak, who is attending his first G20 summit as the UK Prime Minister after succeeding Boris Johnson in July 2023, is expected to meet his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi later in the day. The two leaders are likely to discuss bilateral trade and investment, as well as cooperation on climate action and pandemic response. Sunak will also participate in a roundtable with Indian CEOs and business leaders to explore opportunities for enhancing economic ties between the two countries.

Kishida, who became Japan's Prime Minister in October 2022 after Yoshihide Suga stepped down, is also looking forward to his first meeting with Modi at the G20 summit. The two leaders are expected to reaffirm their strong strategic partnership and shared vision of a free and open Indo-Pacific region. They will also exchange views on regional and global issues of mutual interest, such as maritime security, counter-terrorism, cyber security, and digital economy.

The G20 summit will also witness the first in-person meeting between US President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping since they took office in 2021 and 2022 respectively. The two leaders have been engaged in a tense rivalry over trade, human rights, technology, and regional influence. The summit will provide an opportunity for them to address their differences and find common ground on global challenges such as climate change and pandemic recovery.

Other notable leaders who will attend the G20 summit include Russian President Vladimir Putin, French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, Indonesian President Joko Widodo, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol, Argentine President Alberto Fernández, European Council President Charles Michel, and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

In addition to the G20 members, India has also invited several guest countries and international organizations to participate in the summit. These include Bangladesh, Egypt, Mauritius, Netherlands, Nigeria, Oman, Singapore, Spain, UAE (guest countries), AU (African Union), AUDA-NEPAD (African Union Development Agency), ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations), ISA (International Solar Alliance), CDRI (Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure), ADB (Asian Development Bank) (guest international organizations), UN (United Nations), IMF (International Monetary Fund), WB (World Bank), WHO (World Health Organization), WTO (World Trade Organization), ILO (International Labour Organization), FSB (Financial Stability Board), OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development) (regular international organizations).

The G20 summit will be held at the Bharat Mandapam International Exhibition-Convention Centre (IECC) in Pragati Maidan, a state-of-the-art venue that can accommodate up to 10,000 delegates. The summit venue has been designed with a blend of traditional and modern architecture, reflecting India's rich cultural heritage and contemporary aspirations. The venue also boasts of high-tech facilities such as digital screens, video conferencing systems, biometric security systems, and green energy solutions.

The summit agenda will cover a wide range of topics across six priority areas identified by India as the G20 chair: green development; climate finance & LiFE; accelerated; inclusive & resilient growth; accelerating progress on SDGs; technological transformation & digital public infrastructure; multilateral institutions for the 21st century; women-led development. A G20 Leaders' Declaration will be adopted at the conclusion of the summit, stating the leaders' commitment towards the priorities discussed and agreed upon during the respective ministerial and working group meetings.

The G20 summit is expected to generate positive outcomes for the global community as well as for India's national interests. The summit will showcase India's leadership role in shaping the global agenda and addressing the common challenges faced by humanity. The summit will also enhance India's image as a responsible and reliable partner for peace, prosperity, and progress. The summit will also provide an opportunity for India to strengthen its bilateral and multilateral relations with the G20 members and other stakeholders.
